Book Review - Prayers for Sale by Sandra Dallas

Hey guys! I read Prayers for Sale for a book club I'm in  with my sisters and mom and thought I would review it. I ended up enjoying it more than I thought I would.

Overall: 4 out of 5 stars

Age Range: 17 and up

Synopsis: This story takes place in Middle Swan, Colorado (a small mountain mining town) during the Great Depression. The main character, Hennie, is known for the stories she tells to other members of the town. We follow Hennie as she befriends a new girl in town, Nit.

Characters: Hennie is an 86-year-old woman who loves to quilt and tell stories. She has lived in Middle Swan since before it was Middle Swan. Nit is 17 years old. She and her husband just moved to Middle Swan. Nit is grieving the loss of her first born. Hennie is really sweet and caring. She kind of becomes like a mother to Nit. I liked Hennie a lot. Nit's character could have been a little better developed, but I liked the relationship between Nit and Hennie.

Plot: There isn't really much to say in the way of plot with this book. It is pretty much just Hennie telling stories. To be honest, the beginning of this book is very depressing and hard to get through. Seeing it all come together at the end is great, though. If you are looking for a fast-paced book this definitely isn't it. If you are looking for a heartwarming story about friendship, kindness and forgiveness then maybe try this one.

Other Thoughts: Like I mentioned before, parts of this book are very depressing but I think it is realistic for the time period. This book doesn't shy away from the hardships people in this era faced. One thing the author did really well was creating the atmosphere. While reading this book I could imagine what it would be like to live in that town.

Thanks for reading this! If you have read this book let me know your thoughts in the comments! Have a great day!
