Book Review - Passenger by Alexandra Bracken

Hey guys! So I just finished Passenger by Alexandra Bracken and here are my thoughts on it! This will be a spoiler free review.

Overall: 3 out of 5 stars

Age range: 16 and up

Synopsis: Etta's life is turned upside down when she realizes she's part of a family she never knew about. Nicholas just wants to be free from Ironwoods. The Ironwoods are searching for a powerful object they believe only Etta can find. Together Nicholas and Etta journey across continents and centuries to find this object, keep it out of the Ironwoods' hands and get Etta home again.

Characters: Etta is a violin prodigy. Being a violin player myself I really enjoyed this aspect of her character and the role music played in her life. Nicholas is what I would call a pirate. He enjoys being out on the sea and has all the courage a pirate would need. Nicholas is also African American, which I appreciated just for a little diversity. Both characters were fairly well developed.

Plot: I thought the overall plot was very interesting. There is time travel, so different parts of the book take place in different time periods (for example: Angkor in 1685 and New York City in 1776). The history seemed to be well researched. The first 100 pages or so were VERY tedious to read and I was extremely confused, but towards the end it all came together and got so much better. Just know it will take a good chunk of the book before you really get into it.

Other thoughts: I liked both the main characters separately, but I didn't like the romance between Etta and Nicholas at all. I thought it was insta-lovey and poured on way too thick. I like it when the romance in the book flows with the plot but that didn't happen with this book. I liked when we were reading from Etta's point of view more than from Nicholas's. Also, just a warning, this book has more swear words than I would have appreciated.

Thanks for reading! If you have read this book let me know your thoughts in the comments! Have a great day!
